SpaceForest in the SAR Radar Project: Technology Supporting Defense

Radar and microwave technologies developed by SpaceForest have been implemented in a project of strategic importance for national defense.

Integrated SAR Radar – from Concept to Implementation

SpaceForest has successfully completed a project focused on the Research and Development (R&D) and production of a real-time imaging SAR radar, integrated with the WB Group’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This radar is a key component of a larger, Polish-made reconnaissance-strike system, and its deployment was executed within an exceptionally short timeframe.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a technology that enables the generation of high-resolution ground imagery regardless of weather conditions or time of day (all-weather, day-and-night capability). Equipped with advanced antennas, the system operates in several modes:

  • Stripmap SAR: For wide-area imaging.
  • Spotlight-Strip Mode: For exceptional image detail.
  • Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI): For detecting moving targets and identifying changes in the observed terrain.

The project was commissioned by Vortex. SpaceForest, in collaboration with the XY-Sensing team, was responsible for the design and delivery of the complete SAR radar system described in this article.

Key Features of the Delivered Radar

  • Weight below 10 kg, allowing easy integration with UAVs
  • Operational mapping range up to 15 km
  • High imaging resolution of 15 cm (15×15 cm = 1 pixel)

The system was designed in accordance with defense sector procedures and production standards, allowing for seamless integration with existing military hardware. Its reliability has been confirmed through rigorous testing in diverse weather conditions and temperature ranges.

Commercial Version – HUSSAR SAR Radar

The radar system operates commercially at SpaceForest under the name HUSSAR SAR Radar and is available in three configurations:

  • HUSSAR POD – Mounted under a UAV or aircraft, allowing rapid deployment without the need for integration.
  • HUSSAR INTEGRATED – Built directly into a UAV or aircraft as an onboard component, improving aerodynamics, reducing drag and power consumption, and extending flight duration.
  • HUSSAR DRONE – Suspended under multirotor drones for quick deployment in search and rescue, patrol, or inspection missions in hard-to-reach areas.

The HUSSAR radar combines high-end military capabilities with a wide range of civil applications. It excels in defense missions, search and rescue operations, scientific research, and critical infrastructure monitoring. Thanks to SAR technology, it provides precise terrain imaging in any conditions, making it an indispensable tool for environmental monitoring, such as assessing the impact of floods, landslides, or other natural disasters.

Radar Technology in the Service of Security

We would like to thank WB Group for their trust and for entrusting us with the joint implementation of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) project: a highly specialized component of the Gladius system supporting reconnaissance and operational activities in the defense sector.

Directions for Further Development

As part of our ongoing partnership, we are currently developing a polarimetric version of the SAR radar. This will provide even more comprehensive data regarding the structure and characteristics of observed objects.

By strictly aligning our production procedures and security processes, we are capable of delivering radar solutions for advanced defense systems while maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability. Our cooperation with WB Group confirms that the precision and professionalism of our teams are valued in the most demanding projects. This is yet another milestone where we play a tangible role in creating technology of strategic importance.
